Up On the Roof

Autumn is the loveliest season on the intensive green roof, in the aerial gardener's opinion. The grasses have matured, displaying seed heads that dance in the slightest breeze, held high above tawny foliage. Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low' glows crimson and copper, igniting the roof with fiery splashes. Keen eyed observers may spot standard dwarf iris cultivars blooming, such as citrine 'Prince Pele'. Spiky yuccas sport yellow and green striped foliage, striking a pose even after their September blooms have faded.

Bloomfield Farm Day presents a rare opportunity for the public to view the green roof. Free with admission, the roof will be the backdrop to this fun-filled day celebrating agricultural history, including demonstrations, animals, and live music. The Horticulture Center and historic Springfield Mills will also be open for tours. Find out more on our website.

  1. Autumn is a beautiful season for plants. These photos perfectly embody all the warm autumn colors. Aerial gardening is a nice way to maximize flat roofs, especially in urban areas where there isn't ample space for vegetation.

  2. Ahh...Planting in the fall can give your plants more time to establish healthy root systems, and what's more interesting is that they need less water to establish. Moreover, the fall season is the best season to find new plants because it's the season where plant stores give discounts and bargains.

  3. It’s literally a paradise on the roof. If I have that type of roofing, I’ll definitely don’t mind doing the maintenance myself. All the irrigating, weeding, and other general gardening activities… I’ll do it wholeheartedly! :D

  4. That is a lovely green roof. =) And the overall look of the growing plants definitely made for a spectacular sight. Aside from this, the green roof, in its own little way, is helping the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions.
